"Congress should not be making it harder to protect places that can make our parks and monuments system more inclusive and tell the fuller story of our nation’s history," the group's letter reads. "That is why we urge you to reject any legislation that would limit the president’s authority under the Antiquities Act or codify any unlawful rollbacks of existing national monuments."

"The museum, even on its slow days, offers a chance for outsiders to infuse money into the economy.

“Any time we can get someone to stop in our region, they’ll use our resources. They’ll go to our grocery store or get fuel,” said Natalie Randall, San Juan County’s economic development director. That was the guiding idea behind building the museum in town.

Last year, with the increase in visits to Bears Ears, the majority of visitors at Edge of the Cedars made subsequent purchases in Blanding, generating more than $600,000 for the area in jobs, goods and services."

"Bears Ears is important; all ancestral lands are important. Every congressional district in the United States encompasses the ancestral lands of at least one Tribe. Congressional representatives should get to know the Native American Tribes in their districts and in their states. The reason for this is not only to become advocates for the preservation of Native culture but also because we need indigenous wisdom to lead us forward and teach us what they have learned firsthand through more than 10,000 years of land stewardship. Congressional and Utah leaders are failing to protect the Earth, and after 200 years of occupation of their ancestral lands it is time we ask Native people to lead the way forward."

Call your U.S.representative today and ask them to support Rep Gallego’s bill, H.R. 4518, and oppose Curtis’s bill, H.R. 4532. Call (877) 762-8762 and ask to speak to your representative today.

"Utahns and visitors aplenty benefit from such forethought when standing in one of southern Utah's ethereal, lonely canyons, or contemplating a vividly wide and star-studded night sky. That, for me, is akin to a spiritual experience, and I would be sorry to see future generations deprived of that same opportunity because the land was pillaged or privatized."
