BEARS EARS NATIONAL MONUMENT – Today and Thursday, the Bears Ears National Monument Advisory Committee will meet for the first time, after the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) appointed 15-members to its Monument Advisory Committee (MAC). According to the Obama Bears Ears Proclamation, the MAC “shall consist of a fair and balanced representation of interested stakeholders.”
This MAC committee, which consists entirely of members who were vocally anti-Bears Ears or silent on the issue, comes at a time when the BLM will soon release its Final Environmental Impact Statement and Record of Decision on the Trump Proclamation of the smaller Shash Jaa’ and Indian Creek units of Bears Ears National Monument. Litigation of the 1.35-million-acre Bears Ears National Monument is ongoing, and Tribes have asked repeatedly for planning to be halted. UDB’s previous Press Release on the MAC appointees is here.
“The Bears Ears Federal Advisory Committee fails to provide a fairly balanced committee,” says Honor Keeler (Cherokee), assistant director for Utah Diné Bikéyah.
